The house

The story of Tierra de Luz comes before its wine. The winery works land that was once Hacienda Jaramillo de Abajo, which the house says has founding documents from 1550. The viceroyalty granted it to Juan Jaramillo, the Spanish captain who was the husband of doña Marina, La Malinche.

The first wine came in May 2015, halfway between León and Lagos de Moreno, on the Jalisco side of the line with Guanajuato, along the highway that links the two cities. The vineyard sits at about 6,500 ft (1,983 m), near the mountains, and the house credits that height for its gentle breezes and a continental climate of warm days and cool nights.

Only a few varieties come out of it. Merlot is the grape it works most, bottled as a still rosé and as a sparkling rosé. The red to know is a Malbec from the Reserva line, and the white is a Pinot Gris. The barrels rest in a cellar that is part of the tour.

The guided visit explains the history of the hacienda, passes through the vineyard, the winemaking room, and the cellar, and ends with a tasting. There is also a blind sensory tasting, and the hacienda has a restaurant serving Neapolitan-style pizzas in an open-air space. From León it is about 27 miles (43 km) along the highway to Lagos de Moreno.

The wines

A few grapes and specific labels. Merlot is its most versatile grape, in a still rosé and in a brut sparkling rosé. Its red is the Malbec Reserva, and its white is a Pinot Gris.
