Jalisco Wineries: Los Altos and the Lake Chapala Shore, Mexico

Better known for tequila, Jalisco has two young wine routes promoted by its Tourism Secretariat. One is the Wine and Cheese route in Los Altos, among Jalostotitlán, Valle de Guadalupe (a town in Jalisco, not the better-known valley of Baja California), and Encarnación de Díaz. The other is the Ribera de Chapala route, with vineyards in Tuxcueca, on the south shore of the lake.

Jalostotitlán is less than two hours from Guadalajara, and Encarnación de Díaz, farther north, lies on the road from Lagos de Moreno to Aguascalientes. The Ribera de Chapala runs along the Guadalajara to Jiquilpan highway on the lake's south shore, across from Ajijic, with San Nicolás, San Luis Soyatlán, and El Tepehuaje in the municipality of Tuxcueca.
