Hidalgo Wineries in the Valle del Mezquital, Mexico

Wine is only beginning in the Valle del Mezquital, in the west of Hidalgo next to the Querétaro border, with high-altitude vineyards such as El Refugio, at about 7,350 ft (2,240 m) in Nopala de Villagrán. With El Refugio, Hidalgo became the fifteenth state with commercial wine.

The Valle del Mezquital had vines for wine in colonial times. Commercial farming and wine tourism came back in recent years with El Refugio, planted since 2018, and Tierra y Almas, in Tecozautla, which opened in 2023. Nopala de Villagrán is about 2 hours 40 minutes from Mexico City, and El Refugio is at km 66 of the Pachuca to Querétaro highway, about 30 minutes from Huichapan. Tecozautla is about 2 hours 45 minutes from Mexico City, by the Mexico City to Querétaro motorway (57D) and the road to Huichapan. Tierra y Almas is in Pañhé, about 15 minutes from the town of Tecozautla, on state highway 30.
