Puebla Wineries: Vineyards at the Foot of Two Volcanoes, Mexico

Young vineyards grow on the slopes of the Popocatépetl and the Iztaccíhuatl, in Calpan, Atlixco, and around Cholula, on soils of volcanic origin. They revive a tradition that goes back to the 16th century.

In 1534 thousands of vine cuttings were planted in Atlixco and Puebla, and from 1595 the Crown banned planting new vines, pressed by Andalusian producers. Cultivation returned with projects such as Viñedo Santo Domingo, in Atlixco (2008), and Entreerres, in Calpan (2019).

Calpan is about 35 minutes from downtown Puebla, and Entreerres sits at the km 8 marker of the Huejotzingo to Nealtican highway, about 76 miles (122 km) from Mexico City. Atlixco is under an hour from Puebla by the Vía Atlixcáyotl and a little over two hours from Mexico City. In Cholula, Casa Miguel Hernández has its cellar in San Pedro Cholula, in the Puebla metropolitan area.
