San Luis Potosí Wineries on the Altiplano, Mexico

San Luis Potosí makes semidesert wine on the Altiplano Potosino, between about 5,250 and 6,230 ft (1,600 and 1,900 m), with little rain and big temperature swings between day and night. The vine arrived in colonial times and wine came back in the early 2000s around the capital, with Nebbiolo, Syrah, Malbec, and a rare grape, Rosa del Perú.

There are references to San Luis Potosí wine from 1746, and statistics from 1826 and 1840 record it at haciendas such as Bledos, Gogorrón, and Calderón. After decades of neglect, wine returned in the early 21st century on the Altiplano, with Cava Quintanilla and Pozo de Luna as the most prominent houses. In Palma de la Cruz, the Abella family has made mistela, a sweet fortified wine, since 1948. Moctezuma, home to Cava Quintanilla, is about 45 minutes from the city of San Luis Potosí, and Soledad de Graciano Sánchez, next to the capital, has Pozo de Luna, Bodega 1881, and Viña Cordelia.
