The house

The first wine that Jorge Ferreira and Miguel Gimenez Montesinos tried to make at home ended up as vinegar, the house says. That stumble led them to José Antonio Llaquet, then in charge of the neighboring Freixenet estate, and from that visit came a friendship that guided their first steps.

Ferreira, a Mexican, and Gimenez Montesinos, a Spaniard, incorporated the company on July 21, 2000, and in 2002 bought a former hacienda in Ezequiel Montes. Today the main compound holds the vineyard, a small winery, and the horses.

The vineyard covers about 7 acres (3 hectares) with six red varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Syrah, and Tempranillo. With them the house makes labels with very Mexican names, from young red to aged, and a vermouth made with wine and wormwood. It also has a vineyard in Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, on the Valle de la Independencia route, which yields Locura, a white, and there in September 2025 it held the Vendimia más mexicana (the most Mexican harvest festival), within the Vendimias Guanajuato.

The visit follows the grape's path from vine to bottle, with a tasting at the Enobar and Mexican food at El Itacate, on the Ruta del Arte, Queso y Vino. At the shop you take bottles home, among them Pretexto, which also names the house's wine club. The Ezequiel Montes vendimia is held every year, and the one in July 2023 was the thirteenth.

The wines

The whole Ezequiel Montes vineyard is red, and the house bottles it under Mexican-named labels that run from young to aged. It also makes Apertura, a wine-based vermouth with wormwood, and Locura, a white from the grapes of its Dolores Hidalgo vineyard.
