The house
Vittorio Bortoluz came to Mexico hired by Productos Vinícolas de Delicias to develop vineyards in Chihuahua and Coahuila, and ended up planting his own in Querétaro. He had studied enology in Conegliano, Italy, and was looking for a climate closer to the Mediterranean, which he found in the San Juan del Río valley.
There he founded La Redonda in 1975. The estate is at km 33.5 of the highway to Ezequiel Montes, at about 6,400 ft (1,950 m), where the heat of the day gives way at night. In 2024 the house celebrated its 49th vendimia.
Under the Orlandi brand it bottles a broad range. The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon red, in a 60 and 40 percent proportion, spends 13 months in American oak barrels in its 2018 vintage. There is also a Sauvignon Blanc white, rosés, and traditional-method sparkling wines with Macabeo and Chardonnay from the estate's own vineyard, and the semi-dry rests 12 months in bottle.
The house is open every day with tours of the vineyard and the winery, a wine bar, and a garden. Besides the summer vendimia, it holds festivals through the year such as Wine Colors, with music and wine in the vineyard. Visits are booked by email at least one day ahead, and tickets to the vendimia are sold in the house's online shop.
