The house

Vinos Misión makes wine in Cerocahui, in the municipality of Urique, deep in the Sierra Tarahumara and the Copper Canyon region (Barrancas del Cobre). Its vineyard is on the grounds of the Hotel Misión, owned by the Balderrama family, next to the town's stone church.

The winery tells its origin this way: the vines came with the Jesuits and, when they left Cerocahui, the vineyards were destroyed, except for a few cuttings that the Sánchez family secretly replanted behind their house and tended for generations. When the last Sánchez died, their gardener, who worked at the hotel, rescued those vines and replanted them there. Since 2013 the vineyard has been in the care of Sergio Gutiérrez, born in Cerocahui, who studied agronomy on a scholarship from the Balderrama family.

It grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, and Petit Verdot, and bottles five labels: three reds (Gran Tarahumara, Apotheosis, and Legado), the white Plethora, and the rosé Vino de Mi Madre. They are served at the Balderrama hotels and sold in its online shop.

The Tour del Vino (wine tour) covers the vineyard, the winery, and the barrels, and ends with a guided tasting of the five labels. It is booked through the hotel. Every October, the harvest is celebrated with dances and concerts. From the Bahuichivo station of the Chepe train, the hotel is about 25 minutes away on a mountain road.
