The house
Shedeh was the name of a wine of the pharaohs. According to the winery, shedeh appears on amphorae from the time of Akhenaten and on one among Tutankhamun's grave goods, and it designated a prized Egyptian drink made from red grapes. Under that ancient name, a new winery opened on the main street of Francisco Zarco.
The story the house tells begins with an enterprising woman whose taste for wine led her first to Italy, where she started imagining her own winery, and then to Guadalupe Valley (Valle de Guadalupe), where a trip changed her course. She settled into what, according to the winery, was the farm of one of the first Russian families to settle the valley more than a century ago, and she kept the roofs, walls, and objects.
Today the tasting room occupies one of the original barns and the bistro runs in the building of the old winery. Guided tours cover the places, stories, and objects of the first settlers. The house also hosts private events for ten to two hundred people among the buildings of the old farm.
In the glass are limited-run wines, handmade in small lots, which the house presents as minimal intervention: a varietal Nebbiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon, and Nativo, a blend of Dolcetto, Merlot, and Ruby Cabernet. The tasting room opens Friday through Sunday, and on weekdays only by reservation for groups of ten or more.
