The house
Peña de Bernal stands directly in front of San Juanito, on the Antiguo Camino a San Juan, in San José de la Laja, in the municipality of Tequisquiapan. The partners bought the land in 2007 with the idea of a self-sufficient estate, and the winery opened in 2009.
Of the property's 74 acres (30 hectares), 37 acres (15 hectares) are planted at about 6,330 ft (1,930 m), mostly with Malbec, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Its top line, Abolengo de Don Juan, is reserved for varieties that, according to the house, had an exceptional climate year, and a traditional-method sparkling rosé of Malbec completes the range. From the Abolengo line, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon won gold at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2022 and the 2016 Syrah earned double gold at the New York International Wine Competition 2023.
Guided tours pass through the vineyard, the winery, and the cellar, last between an hour and an hour and a half, leave continuously as groups form, and end with a tasting of three or six labels. The house opens Friday through Sunday and on holidays. There is a terrace with a wood-fired oven and a view of the Peña.
La Casona, the original home of one of the partners, has five rooms among the vines and works as lodging for the winery itself.
The wines
Mostly reds of Malbec, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, as single varieties or blends. The top line, Abolengo de Don Juan, is bottled only in years the house considers exceptional and spends a long time in barrel, and a traditional-method sparkling rosé of Malbec closes the range.
