The house
The vineyard where the winery stands sits about 7,000 ft (2,130 m) above sea level, on a ranch in the Sierra de Arteaga that the Villarreal family has kept for six generations. In Arteaga, Coahuila, the family built a mountain wine house led by Pinot Noir and Malbec.
The first planting dates from 2009, at the El Cedrito ranch, on the initiative of Rosendo A. Villarreal and his sons Rosendo and David. Years of learning followed amid frosts, hail, drought, and pests, and in 2012 Primicias came out, the house's first wine. Today it also works a vineyard in San Martín, at about 5,900 ft (1,800 m).
The range is wide for a high-elevation winery. Alongside the Pinot Noir and Malbec there are Merlot, Tempranillo, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, and among the whites Chardonnay and Riesling. An in-house winemaking team follows the wine from vineyard to bottle and decides when it goes to market.
The visit is a tour of about 75 minutes through the vineyard and the winery. The house takes walk-ins when there is room, and on Saturdays at noon there is a fixed tour. To be sure of a spot, reserve by phone or email. The labels are also sold in the house's online shop.
