The house

The 2023 Sol de Noche received 94 points in the Peñín Guide 2026, a score that matched the highest of that edition, and it was born in a vineyard at about 6,900 ft (2,100 m) in elevation, in the Sierra de Arteaga, Coahuila, southeast of Saltillo. Days there are mild and nights are cold.

The story begins in 1998, when the Dávila family planted, with the support of government agencies, an experimental vineyard with fifteen varieties to see which adapted to the sierra. From that trial came Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, and Pinot Noir. The vineyard now covers about 35 acres (14 hectares), according to the house.

Winemaking is by José Trillo Rivas, an agronomist born in the Ribera del Duero who trained at Vega Sicilia and worked at Clos Apalta, in Chile, before arriving in Arteaga. That gap between the sierra's mild days and cold nights sets the pace of ripening.

The house works mostly with blends, with Cabernet Sauvignon as the backbone and Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, or Pinot Noir in varying proportions. It also bottles a varietal Pinot Noir and an unoaked rosé, fermented in steel.

The guided tour with tasting, the restaurant, and the shop are booked by advance reservation only, and the vineyard admits only adults.
