The house
Corn once filled the land of Hacienda San José del Tepozán, in Encarnación de Díaz, between Lagos de Moreno and San Juan de los Lagos, until 2016, when the family of José Vega and Karim Hernández set part of it aside for vines. It began with half a hectare (about 1.2 acres) of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, and Albariño and Malbec came later.
In 2020 the estate released its first three wines, a white, a rosé, and a red, and the brand was formally born. Since 2021 it has fermented with wild yeast and minimal intervention, bottled without filtering or stabilizing, and it talks about regenerative viticulture and organic management of the vineyard.
Its name was made with bubbles. The 2021 Bruto de Tempranillo, a traditional-method sparkling wine, won gold at México Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2022, and the 2022 Bruto Albariño took Grand Gold the following year, the first for a Jalisco wine according to the contest itself. The Zafado series uses the ancestral method, with natural sparkling wines in rosé, orange, and red.
It receives visitors by appointment at the hacienda itself, with guided tours of the vineyard and the winery, for groups or private, and a tasting of its still and sparkling wines. The press has included it among the young wineries that are changing how people think of Jalisco wine.
The wines
Both sparkling methods live here. The traditional method, with a second fermentation in the bottle, is in the Bruto series, and the ancestral method is in the Zafado wines. It also makes still wines, such as a Malbec red by carbonic maceration. Since 2021 it has fermented with wild yeast and bottled without filtering or stabilizing.
