The house
Every wine at Bodega Lobo carries the title of an opera. Its owners see in the body of a red something of the drama of classical music, and so the Tempranillo is Madama Butterfly and the Syrah, Tosca.
The house was born of two partners, Dr. Juan Francisco Hernández Medina and engineer Juan Raúl Ortiz Herrera. They planned to distill agave, but on seeing that the land suited vines they went to Ensenada to train at the Escuela de Oficios (trade school) in El Porvenir. They planted in 2008, brought in the first harvest in 2011, and opened to the public in 2014.
The vineyard occupies part of the former Hacienda de San Lorenzo del Lobo, which gives the name, in San Francisco del Rincón, between the Pénjamo mountains and the Lobos mountains, a short distance from León. It works five red varieties that adapted to that soil: Tempranillo, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel, and Malbec.
Visits are simple and by appointment. There is a walk among the vines, a production room, and a tasting in the underground cellar, and on the Vivaldi visit the tasting is accompanied by opera. Regular visits are on Saturdays from 10 a.m. and those on other days are arranged with the house. It is in the west of the state, in the direction of León. Booking is online.
