The house
At 17, Don Julián bought a plot next to Peña de Bernal. Today his children run Puertas de la Peña on it, which presents itself as the first vineyard in Bernal and makes a sparkling rosé from Syrah alone and a white that splits Macabeo, Xarello, and Muscat in equal parts.
Winemaking is in the hands of Trinidad Jiménez, who holds a doctorate in viticulture and enology from the University of Turin and who previously worked in San Miguel de Allende and as an assistant in Querétaro, the United States, Portugal, and France. The estate is about five minutes from the center of town, with the Peña directly in front, in the dry climate of the Querétaro semidesert and on the road toward the Sierra Gorda.
Ocho Apellidos, from Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec, and Abuelo Julián, a Malbec, spend time in French and American oak barrels, 12 months for the first in its 2021 vintage and 14 for the second in the 2020. Alongside them are the Merlot rosé Hortensias y Rosas, the white Cuatro Motivos, and the sparkling wine Encuentros.
A full complex grew around the vineyard, with a cellar, the restaurant Olivo Tinto, which serves the estate's wines on its menu, halls for weddings, and a 39-room hotel with a spa among the vines. Every year the house celebrates its vendimia, and a visit is a tour of the cellar and the vineyard.
