The house

A hill facing the middle of the valley, at the km 81.5 marker of the Tecate to Ensenada highway, holds sixteen rooms, two restaurants, and a winery that bottles under its owner's surname. The wines are called Melchum after Gabriela Melchum, who founded Hacienda Guadalupe with Daniel Sánchez.

The couple opened the hacienda in 2008, drawn by the wine vocation of Guadalupe Valley (Valle de Guadalupe). The Melchum line includes Merlot and Tempranillo varietals, a white, a rosé, and a blend, El Caporal, of Nebbiolo, Merlot, and Tempranillo. The name is that of the caporal of the old haciendas, the man who commanded the cowhands.

According to the house, its wines won awards in 2013 and 2014 at Ensenada Tierra del Vino, the competition organized by the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California.

The hotel is designed with couples in mind, with sixteen rooms that have a balcony or terrace and a panoramic view of the valley. The hacienda also hosts weddings, corporate events, and groups, which are handled separately from tasting reservations.

You can come just to taste, stay for a meal, or sleep in a room with a balcony or terrace facing the valley. The winery is open Wednesday through Monday and closed on Tuesdays. Tastings range from a basic flight to the Melchum line, a chocolate pairing, and a private tasting, and in high season it pays to book early.

The wines

Melchum wines are mostly single-variety reds from Merlot and Tempranillo, plus a blend, a white, and a rosé. El Caporal is the house's most distinctive label, for its mix of Nebbiolo with Merlot and Tempranillo.
