The house

On August 19, 1597, the governor of Nueva Vizcaya granted Lorenzo García lands in Parras and permission, with authorization from Philip II, to plant vines and make wine and aguardiente. On that grant the Hacienda de San Lorenzo was built, and on the strength of that document Casa Madero presents itself as the oldest winery on the continent.

The hacienda had thirteen owners before 1893, when Evaristo Madero, patriarch of the family that gave it its present name, traveled to Europe and bought the San Lorenzo y Mexique company, and with it the property. For decades the house winemaker was Francisco Rodríguez González, and today technical direction is led by Christian Rojas.

The vineyard is at about 4,900 ft (1,500 m) in elevation, in a dry, semi-warm climate with hot afternoons that cool as night falls. The soils, of marine origin and Mesozoic age, mix clay and limestone and hold water well. Part of the plots is certified organic by USDA Organic and BCS Öko Garantie.

The tour enters the oldest areas of the winery, where presses from 1808 and barrels more than half a century old are preserved. The pairing lunch is served at the hacienda, with a seasonal menu from the chef, and the house's bottles are sold at the hacienda shop.

The wines

Barrel-aged reds, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, and Syrah, which the house calls Shiraz. It has a line made with certified organic grapes and rounds out the range with Chardonnay, rosé, and a sparkling wine.
