The house
The name of Barro Viejo's 5 Cielos refers to the number of daughters of Enrique and Mina Salinas, and the family makes it at the Ex Hacienda La Soledad, in Parras de la Fuente, Coahuila.
In a valley that has grown grapes since the land grant of 1597, Barro Viejo is a young house. The property returned to the family's hands and for a time was also used for cattle. In 2008 Dr. Enrique Salinas decided to found the winery, and in 2011 Herencia came out, its first label, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Grenache that ferments in steel tanks and spends twelve months in French and American oak. The doors opened to visitors in 2019.
There are about 12 acres (5 hectares) of vineyard within the hacienda, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Grenache. The range is almost all red. The 5 Cielos, from Merlot and Syrah, rests nine months in barrel, and the list continues with a Gran Reserva, Cava 13, and a white called Andaluz. You can buy the wines at the house shop.
The tour goes through the vineyard, the winery, and the barrel room, and ends with three wines and a charcuterie board. Booking is done online. Groups of up to 16 people can stay overnight at the hacienda, and there are vineyard walks and horseback rides.
