The house

About 125 acres (50 hectares) of vines, with some twenty varieties according to the winery itself, surround De Cote in the Valle de Bernal, in Ezequiel Montes, Querétaro. The winery has a cellar dug 23 ft (7 m) deep, where the reserva and gran reserva wines and a sweet fortified wine rest. Atempo is the brand of its sparkling wines and its fresher wines.

The name comes from the maternal surname of the brothers who founded the house. According to the press, the first vines were planted in 2007, on three hectares (about 7 acres), and winemaker Francisco Rodríguez advised growing from the start. The winery later opened as a full wine house, with winemaking, aging, and a restaurant.

Under the vines are clay, tepetate (a hardened volcanic soil), and pumice. The valley is temperate, it rains in summer, and the cold is concentrated in January and February, the months when the vine rests.

You can tour the vineyard on foot, by bike, or on a small train, and the ride ends in the tank room, the cellar, and the tasting. There is also an enology experience with the winemaker and the sommelier, from the vineyard to the aging room. A restaurant with chef-driven cooking, halls for weddings and events, and a harvest festival every summer round out the visit. Peña de Bernal is on the horizon, a few minutes by road.

The wines

There are whites, rosés, sparkling wines, and a sweet fortified wine, but the weight falls on the aged reds of the Gran Reserva series, varietals and blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, and Shiraz that rest in the underground cellar. The fresher wines come out under the Atempo brand.
