The house
Cuna de Tierra built its winery with cast tepetate (a hardened volcanic soil), the earth of the site itself, and in 2026 one of its reds, the 2021 Gran Pago de Ricardo Vega, was chosen best Mexican wine at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. The vines, of French origin, have grown in Dolores Hidalgo since 1995.
The origin lies in two families. Juan Manchón arrived in Dolores Hidalgo determined to promote the vine and found in Ignacio Vega an ally willing to plant on his land. With advice from Eduardo and Joaquín Madero, doctors in viticulture from the University of Montpellier, they put in the first vines in 1995: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Semillón. The first winemaking came in 2005 and the first commercial label, Cuna de Tierra, in 2008.
Ricardo Vega, son of Ignacio, headed the house until his death in December 2024, and the red that carries his name is the one that won in Brussels. Winemaking is in the hands of Juan Manchón and Ramón Vélez, who oversee the work from vineyard to bottle. Earlier, in 2023, two of its wines had won Grand Gold at Les Citadelles du Vin, in Bordeaux.
The winery itself makes the drive worthwhile. It was designed by Ignacio Urquiza and Bernardo Quinzaños, of the Centro de Colaboración Arquitectónica, and finished in 2013. From the lookout of the Torre de Tierra you see the whole vineyard, and among the vines there is a restaurant to stretch out the visit. It is at km 11 of the highway to San Luis de la Paz, just outside Dolores Hidalgo.
The wines
Mostly reds from French, Italian, and Spanish grapes grown in its Dolores Hidalgo vineyard, often as blends, like Nebbiolo with Malbec and Tempranillo, or Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Its more ambitious labels go through barrel, and it also bottles whites such as the Viognier.
