The house

Hacienda San Martín Caballero lived off cattle and crops when Claudio and Nelly Rocha visited Guadalupe Valley (Valle de Guadalupe) in 1985 and fell in love with the place. For more than two decades it stayed a working farm, until the family decided to plant vines.

The change came in 2008, when Claudio met Rogelio Morales, a winemaker who had worked at Spring Mountain Winery in Napa and who joined as a mentor. The winery was unveiled in 2010 and opened to visitors in 2014.

The team is small and mostly family: Ernesto I. Rocha is the viticulturist, Claudio Rocha oversees the vineyard, and Morales supports the winemaking. They work with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Nebbiolo, Tempranillo, Syrah, and Chenin Blanc, among other grapes from the estate itself. The wines are grouped into young, premium, and high-end, and the tastings are built on that scale.

The tasting room is in San Antonio de las Minas, on the highway from Tecate to Ensenada at the km 87.5 marker, and it opens Friday through Sunday. There is a tasting bar with wine by the glass, plus premium, high-end, and private sommelier-led tastings, booked online through the winery's website. The official address places it in San Antonio de las Minas, Guadalupe Valley. The young Tempranillo and the Cabernet Sauvignon mark the two ends of the catalog.
