The house
Getting to En'kanto means leaving the main roads for a dirt track, and the detour is part of the charm. This is a small-scale vineyard in San Antonio de las Minas, northeast of Ensenada, with shade trees, hammocks, a garden, and a terrace where the tastings are poured. The name plays on encanto, the Spanish word for charm, spelled the house's own way.
The vines went in during 2010: Chardonnay, Nebbiolo, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Unlike many houses in the valley that buy their fruit, En'kanto makes almost all of its wines from its own grapes. The exception has been the Chenin Blanc in its white blend, and the house has said it eventually wants to work only with estate fruit.
Its best seller is a 100% Nebbiolo from vines that, according to the house, wake up under the morning mist. The Dazzle white blends Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Viognier, fermented in steel with no oak.
Three private cabins look out over the vineyard and the hills, each with a soaking tub, its own patio, an outdoor fireplace, and a hammock, which turns the property into a very small hotel. Guests have the vineyard and the garden at hand, and walks through both are part of the stay. Tastings on the terrace run Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and you don't have to stay overnight to join one.
