The house
Madera 5 began in a garage at Calle Aragón 126 in Ensenada, where a group of friends made wine for themselves. That is where the first name came from, Cava Aragón 126, which still travels with the brand. The current one comes from a golf joke, about a good shot with a 5-wood.
There were five founders: José Luis Rendón, Sergio Figueroa, Miguel Ángel Ortiz, Mauricio Cantú, and Víctor Segura. In 2007 they decided to open to the public and give the winery a commercial footing, and Segura has been the winemaker ever since. Most of the grapes come from Valle de San Vicente, south of Ensenada, and the winemaking is his signature.
The house has four core labels, nearly all blends: Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese, Tempranillo with Cabernet, a Nebbiolo, and a white of Sauvignon Blanc with Chardonnay. Joining them is Rojo 126, named for the address of the original garage.
Today it pours at El Sauzal, at the start of the wine route, in a cluster of small wineries that share space with La Trinidad, Cava Córdova, Vinsur, and La Resistance. That neighborhood lets you try several houses in one stop, on the way out of Ensenada and before the climb to the valley. The brand keeps its second name, Cava Aragón 126, on its social media pages and its sales email.
The wines
A house of blends: nearly every wine crosses two varieties, with grapes that come mostly from Valle de San Vicente. A single-variety Nebbiolo and a white of Sauvignon Blanc with Chardonnay round out the range.
