The house

It was meant to be the retirement house. Miguel Ávila Niebla and Laura Emilia, engineers with a taste for cooking and wine, chose a plot in El Porvenir for the life they planned after decades of work, and gave the estate her middle name. The quiet house gradually became a winery with a vineyard, a tasting room, and guests.

The property covers about 12 acres (5 hectares), about 10 of them (4 hectares) in vines, and the family itself tends it. Production is small and the doors are open: Casa Emiliana belongs to the Asociación de Vinícolas de El Porvenir, the group of wineries in that ejido, a communal farming area in Guadalupe Valley.

The grapes come from the estate vineyard, and the family says it looks for balanced wines that show the minerality of the soil, with technical rigor and artisanal work. The range is short: reds like the Cabernet Sauvignon and a blend of Syrah with Nebbiolo, a rosé, and Bella Mia, a Chardonnay sparkling wine.

Tastings take place in the tasting room of the house, with the family, and there are rooms to stay the night among the vines. The guesthouse is a B&B with breakfast, run by the family itself, on Calle Zapata in Ejido El Porvenir, in the municipality of Ensenada. Especially on weekends, the house asks you to write or call ahead to confirm tastings and tours of the vineyard and cellar.
