The house
Above 4,900 ft (1,500 m), in the Altos de Parras, Camino Corazón began as one man's idea and is now sustained by his family. The house draws a clear line between two ways of making wine, a young line with no barrel and red blends aged in oak.
Juan Jesús Padilla founded the winery in 2009 with about 12 acres (5 hectares) in the ejido Los Hoyos (an ejido is land held by a farming community), and over the years the vineyard grew to about 91 acres (37 hectares). After his death, in 2018, his wife and children stayed at the helm. Chardonnay, Malbec, Shiraz, Merlot, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc grow there today.
The house credits its wine to the cool climate of the upper part of the valley, where elevation tempers the heat of the semi-desert. From there come the Chardonnay, Rosado, and Malbec of the young line, made for early drinking, and the reds Brújula and Atempo, blends that spend ten to twelve months in barrel before bottling. Brújula, in its 2021 vintage, is mostly Tempranillo, with Shiraz and Merlot.
Guests who book tour the vineyard, hear the story of the house from the people who keep it going, and try four wines with a charcuterie board, in an experience of about 90 minutes. There is also a pizza workshop inside the vineyard. Reservations are made online.
