The house

The Bibayoffs descend from the Molokans, dissident Christians who left Russia, passed through Ellis Island, and arrived in Guadalupe Valley in the early 20th century, when the Russian colony was founded. Today brothers David and Abel Bibayoff Dalgoff run the winery at Rancho Toros Pintos.

David began making wine at home, and the winery grew out of that habit. His best-known red is an old-vine Zinfandel. Tintoyoff brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Nebbiolo aged in French oak, and the white blends Chenin Blanc, Colombard, and Muscat. Guides report that David himself pours the tasting and tells the family story.

It is said to be the only winery of Russian tradition in the valley, and the visit backs that up with objects: a small museum collects clothing and utensils from the Molokan families who settled the area.

Rancho Toros Pintos, where the brothers run the winery, also has gardens for events and a camping area, so the afternoon can stretch long past the last glass. The cellar tasting needs no group and no appointment. The vineyard and winery tour does: you have to book it and gather at least five people, and in return you taste wines still in progress, before they reach the bottle.
