The house

The Alximia winery is a round, three-story building, and the shape has a reason: grapes come in at the top level and move down by gravity to the fermentation and aging floors.

Behind it is Álvaro Álvarez Parrilla, a mathematician by training and a researcher in pure mathematics, the son of an astronomer and of the founder of the Museo de Ciencias de Ensenada. He began making wine in 2005, with a Cabernet and a Cabernet Merlot of barely twenty cases each, and in 2008 he turned it into a business, Alximia Vino Elemental, in San Antonio de las Minas. His siblings work in it too.

The name joins alchemy and science, and the house carries it onto its labels: the main wines allude to the four elements, and the logo draws four linked circles. Organic farming techniques are used in the vineyard, without giving up technical control in the cellar, and aging takes place in French oak barrels.

The tasting room is on the second level. From there your eye follows the path of the grape, from fruit reception to the barrels. It sits on the Las Lomas al Tigre local road, at the km 3 marker, and reservations are a good idea. Among its labels are Magma, a blend of Carignan and Grenache, and Pira, whose fact sheet for the 2012 harvest is still posted on the winery's website.

The wines

Alximia makes red and white blends and single-variety wines aged in French oak, and groups them by the four elements. Among the reds are blends of Mediterranean grapes, such as Carignan with Grenache.
