The house

Xecué means love in Kiliwa, one of Baja California's native languages, and under that name Alberta Ceja Medina and José Luis Hernández, two engineers who found each other through wine, opened their winery in 2005. The house's website speaks of wines with a native soul.

Hernández, an agricultural engineer, looked after the vineyard and operations. Ceja, a chemical engineer and winemaker, directs the winemaking and the administration. Hernández died in 2026, and the winery remains in the family's hands.

The house works with grapes from three valleys in the Ensenada area: Guadalupe, San Vicente, and Ojos Negros. Its Merlot carries 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from San Vicente, and the Reserva blends four varieties from the three valleys. The house says it follows sustainable practices that respect the surroundings.

The tasting room is on Federal Highway 3, at km 88.9 in Guadalupe Valley (Valle de Guadalupe). Tastings focus on the fuller-bodied reds, with a kitchen that closes at 6:20 p.m., and last from one hour to an hour and a half. Reserve on the house's website or by email. Groups of 13 or more coordinate their visit by WhatsApp. Besides those reds, the house's list adds a Cabernet Sauvignon, Colores del Valle, and Ethnicity.

The wines

Full-bodied reds, often made with grapes from several valleys: Merlot from Guadalupe with Cabernet from San Vicente, and a Reserva of four grapes. The house's tastings center on those reds.
