The house
Four years after it began, Monte Rojo put its name on the map of Coahuila. In May 2023, its 2022 Verdejo white won a gold medal at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. The Saltillo press reported the news, and the house recounts it in its own history.
The winery was born in 2019 on the initiative of two growers, Ignacio Carrillo and Juan Constante. Its vineyard is in the ejido Zertuche (an ejido is land held by a farming community), in the Altamira valley, about 18 miles (29 km) from the municipal seat of Ramos Arizpe, among semi-desert hills north of Saltillo.
They grow Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Syrah for the reds and the rosé, in addition to the Verdejo. The house says it combines traditional and modern practices in the field, with care for the environment. Its online shop currently offers the 2021 Verdejo, the rosé of that same year, and the Ensamble El Tinto 2022. The press of Ramos Arizpe counts it, along with Bodegas Capellanía, among the seven grape producers of the municipality.
When the Coahuila government relaunched the Vinos y Dinos route in early 2026, which went from 11 to 22 houses, Monte Rojo joined the group of urban vineyards of Saltillo, which the route proposes for short visits from the city. Anyone who wants to visit should ask the house how and where it receives visitors.
