The house
An aguaje is the place where cattle drink, and on the lands of the old Hacienda de Garabato, in Pabellón de Arteaga, there was one. A vineyard was planted there in 2012 with the idea of reviving vine culture in northern Aguascalientes, and the house took its name from the place.
The first vines, planted in early 2012, were Malbec brought from France. Syrah and Nebbiolo came later, and today the vineyard adds up to about 12 acres (5 hectares). Malbec remains the backbone of the winery, with two reds that rest 12 to 16 months in French white oak barrels.
It bottles white, rosé, and red under three brands, Reborujo, Puerta Abierta, and Corchete. Reborujo became its identity label. The 2017 vintage won gold at México Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles in 2019, and in 2024 the house dedicated a festival to it with its name.
El Aguaje is on the Pabellón de Arteaga wine route, next to the main compound of the 17th-century Garabato hacienda, on the road from Garabato to Emiliano Zapata. The visit follows the grape's path, from the vineyard to the barrel room, with a tasting at the end. Experiences are booked by message, before you head out from the state capital.
The wines
Everything revolves around the vineyard's Malbec. Its main reds are single-variety wines of that grape, some young and others aged 12 to 16 months in French white oak barrels. There is also a white and a rosé under its three brands.
