The house

Around 1750, the house says, Fray Junípero Serra planted vines in the area before moving on to the Sierra Gorda to found his missions. More than two centuries later, in 2010, a family took up the idea and gave his name to a vineyard in the Valle de Colón, very close to Bernal, in Querétaro.

The vineyard is at about 6,400 ft (1,950 m), on clay soils that are deep and well drained, with cold mornings and sunny days. Malbec, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc grow there, worked with traditional practices, precision viticulture, and organic compost, without pesticides, according to the house.

The winery has two lines. Previo is the flagship blend, with 70% Malbec, 20% Merlot, and 10% Syrah, twelve months in French and American oak barrels and another year in bottle before release, and the line also includes a young rosé. Beatus holds the varietals, made to show the grape and the terroir.

There is a restaurant among the vines, and the estate sits on the road where, in Colón and in Bernal, the wine route crosses the cheese route. Its wines are also found outside Querétaro, in specialty and supermarket stores. For Turismo del Estado de Querétaro it is a sustainable vineyard, and the family wants to keep caring for it by that same standard.

The wines

Mostly reds, plus a young rosé. The Previo blend combines Malbec, Merlot, and Syrah with French and American oak aging and bottle rest, and the Beatus line bottles varietals such as Malbec and Syrah.
