The house
When the Abellas arrived in Mexico in 1939, they came from Palma d'Ebre, a Catalan town on the banks of the Ebro, from a war and from concentration camps in France. They settled on what was Rancho Cordelia, in San Luis Potosí, planted vines, olive trees, and almond trees, and began making mistela (a sweet fortified wine) for household use and so as not to lose their roots.
La Mistela de Cordelia, the house label, has been made since 1948 with Rosa del Perú, a pink variety, and it is now in its fourth generation. It is stomped and pressed by hand and spends 24 months in French and American oak barrels. Construction of the winery began in 1965.
The newest generation turned the family trade into a business. Since 2014 there are also reds, whites, rosés, and a sparkling wine, and since 2015 Federico Sánchez Salomón has advised on winemaking. The young NOI line sees no barrel, and an orange wine is made in an amphora.
The vineyard is in Palma de la Cruz, in the municipality of Soledad de Graciano Sánchez, on semiarid land on the edge of the capital of San Luis Potosí. On Saturdays and Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., brunch is served among the vines, and the house announces guided visits with a tasting on fixed dates.
The wines
Two eras sit side by side in the winery. One is the Mistela de Cordelia, a sweet fortified wine of Rosa del Perú with two years in French and American oak, made the way the family made it in the mid-20th century. The other is the labels born since 2014, among them the young NOI line, with no barrel, a sparkling wine, and an amphora orange wine.
