The house
Everything Santos Brujos bottles comes from a single estate, and that estate carries two seals. By the winery's account, it was the first vineyard in Mexico with Demeter biodynamic certification (Demeter is the international certifier of biodynamic farming), and it is also certified organic. Sergio Salgado and his family founded it in 2008 in Guadalupe Valley (Valle de Guadalupe), and on paper the winery is called Viñas del Sol, though the label says Santos Brujos.
There are two wines, both single-variety, and neither uses purchased grapes. Tempranillo is the backbone of the house, and enough has been held back to assemble verticals (several vintages of the same wine), which are sold in specialty shops. The Chardonnay, its white, comes from the same land and carries the same seals.
The visit starts on foot among the vineyard rows, so wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and ends with a private, personalized tasting with the people who work the vineyard. You request it by email, with suggested times at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and minors and pets are not admitted. The entrance is on Calle Héroes de Baja California in Ejido El Porvenir (communal farmland), in the municipality of Ensenada, and the experiences email is on the winery's contact page.
