The house

The sacred and the profane meet on the labels at La Lomita, and also in its best-known bottle: the Pagano, a pure Grenache in a square bottle. The winery arrived in Guadalupe Valley (Valle de Guadalupe) with provocative names, unusual shapes, and a room designed to welcome people.

Fernando Pérez Castro founded it in 2009 and later opened, with the same family, the organic estate Finca La Carrodilla. He has also been a voice for the trade: he led Provino, the association that brings together dozens of Baja California wineries, and presided over the state council of grape producers.

Since 2015 the winemaking has been in the hands of Gustavo González, who holds a degree in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's in enology from UC Davis, and who also signs the wines of La Carrodilla. The range revolves around reds from Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, and Syrah, aged in oak.

The winery sits on a local road in San Marcos, next to Finca La Carrodilla. You tour the winery and the cellar, taste in the tasting room, and the afternoon can continue at TrasLomita, the restaurant that shares the property and the parking lot with the winery. It presents itself as a Mediterranean restaurant and holds its harvest celebration together with the winery. To book a tasting, its Instagram links to a reservations page.

The wines

La Lomita makes mostly oak-aged reds, with Grenache as its signature grape and blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, and Syrah. Its names, from Sacro to Pagano, play on the religious and the profane.
