The house
The walls of the San Luis de Letras hacienda went up in 1854, and between them wine is made today in Pabellón de Arteaga. The house speaks of about 300 acres (120 hectares) of vineyard planted with more than 18 grape varieties.
Its recent story begins in 1992, when El Greco was born, a bullfighting-themed restaurant that from the start brought together cooking, wine, and vineyard. In 2015 that idea took shape in Hacienda de Letras, where the winery, the restaurant, and the vines now sit side by side. The house says it has more than forty years of experience as a grower.
The vineyard yields around 500 metric tons of grapes a year, according to the house, and several labels come from it, among them the dry red Aramis and the dry white Karol. The layout is that of Mexican country houses, with wide gardens and 19th-century walls, and for that reason the hacienda is a frequent setting for weddings and celebrations.
With a guide you tour the vineyard and the winery, enter the barrel room, and the visit ends with a tasting or a picnic among the vines. El Greco sits next to the vineyard, the shop sells the house wines, and the property has cabins, so you can tour the Pabellón de Arteaga wineries without going back to the city that day.
