The house

People know it first for the architecture. About twenty freestanding rooms of roughly 215 square feet (20 square meters) each hang from a hillside on steel structures, so they touch the ground as little as possible. The San Diego-based studio of Jorge Gracia designed them, and the work has been published in outlets such as ArchDaily, which lists it under its first name, Endémico.

Behind the hotel is a larger development of about 245 acres (99 hectares) at the km 75 marker of the Tecate to Ensenada highway, bringing together vineyard, winery, and a residential area. The winery farms 10 acres (4 hectares) and makes about 4,000 bottles a year, which, according to the house, were meant for its own guests and visitors to drink.

Wine is part of the stay. The hotel rate includes a private winery visit with a tasting, and at Cava Origen the making and aging of the wines are explained. The wines carry the names of animals from the region's wildlife, such as Coyote or Lince Rojo.

At Toba, the restaurant beside the pool, which according to its website is open every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., the kitchen cooks with wood fire, smoke, and herbs from the area. The same table pours Coyote, the house Grenache, by the glass or the bottle, and it is hard to find outside the property.

The wines

A very small production of about 4,000 bottles a year, served mostly on the property. There are varietals such as the Grenache Coyote and the Merlot Lince Rojo, plus a sparkling wine, a rosé, and a red, by the glass or the bottle.
