The house

At Finca La Carrodilla, wine starts with the soil. The Pérez Castro family, the same family behind La Lomita, had the vineyard and the winery certified organic in 2011. Since then they have farmed without synthetic herbicides or pesticides and with biodynamic practices, in Ejido El Porvenir (an ejido is land held by a farming community).

Gustavo González has been the winemaker since 2015. The house wants the wine to speak for the vineyard with as little intervention as possible: fruit from its own land, many single-variety labels, and just one red blend in the lineup.

There are Chenin Blanc whites, a rosé called Polen, and reds from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tempranillo. Canto de Luna, the blend, shifts in proportion with each harvest. It is the wine the estate is best known for, a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, and Syrah. The single-variety wines carry the estate's name on the label, and Decanter reviewed the 2020 vintage of Canto de Luna. La Carrodilla belongs to the Asociación de Vinícolas de El Porvenir, the El Porvenir winemakers' association, and its neighbor is La Lomita, the house of the same family.

Tastings move up to the winery rooftop, with Guadalupe Valley (Valle de Guadalupe) spread out all around and the organic rows in view. Booking ahead is wise, especially on weekends and during harvest. The entrance is at plot 99 in Ejido El Porvenir.

The house wants the wine to speak for the vineyard with as little intervention as possible: fruit from its own organic estate, many single-variety labels, and one red blend in the lineup. It works with Chenin Blanc whites, a rosé, and reds from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tempranillo.
