The house

Before Ojos Negros had a wine route, the Hussongs were already there. In 2000 Ricardo Hussong planted the first vines on his ranch, about 24 miles (38 km) east of Ensenada, and Bodegas San Rafael was born, named for the old name of the valley. Today its wines carry the name Ojos Negros.

It was an experiment. With cuttings of French origin, several given by Hans Backhoff of Monte Xanic, the family planted about 17 acres (7 hectares) of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Syrah. Almost every plant took, and the first harvest, in 2003, filled eight barrels. Two years later came the first label, Passion Meritage, which now adds Cabernet Franc and Malbec to the original grapes and spends 18 to 20 months in oak barrels.

Winemaking is in the hands of Ludwig Hussong, Ricardo's eldest son, who studied at Napa Valley College. The family makes its wine in the valley itself, from planting to bottling, and sells within Mexico. It is also a member of the Meritage Alliance, which brings together houses that make Bordeaux-style blends.

Ojos Negros is a cattle and cheese valley that is only beginning to show up on wine maps. Winery visits are scheduled ahead by phone with the family, and they combine well with the cheese makers along the route.
