The house
An immigrant from Padula, in the Italian province of Salerno, arrived in Cuatro Ciénegas around 1860 and traded Michele Francesco Ferrigno for Miguel Ferriño. He began by distilling grape aguardiente (a distilled spirit) and brandy under the name La Fronteriza.
The railroad widened his market, and through the 20th century the house leaned toward fortified wines. In 1955 seven of his children formalized the company Bodegas Ferriño, and since 1990 it has been run by the following generations, which now add up to five families of descendants, according to the house.
Sangre de Cristo, which the house registered as a brand around 1900, is inspired by the Italian Lacrima Christi and is made with Lenoir and Rosa del Perú, grapes of the old northern tradition. Beside that sweet line is the Muscat from century-old vines, whose 2022 vintage won gold at the 2023 Mexico International Wine Competition, according to the house. In recent years came the Reserva de la Casa, 70 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 percent Merlot, with 26 months in French oak barrels. The range also includes a Generoso Tradicional, from the fortified line that remains at the center of the house.
The winery is right in the center of town, on Calle Presidente Venustiano Carranza Norte, and its shop opens every day, with shorter hours on Sundays. Tours of the winery and vineyard are arranged ahead of time with the house.
