The house
Above 6,900 ft (2,100 m), in the Valle de las Arcinas, a family planted in 2014 the first vineyard of what is now Vinícola El Consuelo and waited until 2018 for its first winemaking. The valley lies near Trancoso, in the Zacatecas semi-desert, where the sun dominates most of the year, rain is scarce, and winters are cold.
The house works about 49 acres (20 hectares) and describes that climate as the one that allows slow ripening of the grapes. In the field it lets vegetation cover the soil between the rows, with no chemicals, and it closes its bottles with stoppers made of plant material derived from sugarcane, with a zero carbon footprint. Winemaking is by José Ignacio Maturana, who according to the state press works with minimal intervention.
Its reds follow the Bordeaux pattern, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot almost always blended, and there is also a Sauvignon Blanc and rosés. They come in three lines, Cacholá, Viento Negro, and Las Arcinas, which carries the name of the valley.
Among the vines are the restaurant La Cuija, with rustic Mediterranean cooking, and Cacholá Winebar, outdoors with live music. The guided tastings let you try the wines and explain how they are made. The winery sits beside federal Highway 49, about 30 minutes from the city of Zacatecas.
