The house

Satevó sits where the channels of the Santa Clara, San Pedro, and Satevó rivers meet, three rivers in a desert state. On that land, in 2010, a family set out to make wine, and that is where the name Tres Ríos comes from.

The first planting was in 2011, at Hacienda San Agustín, on the north bank of the San Pedro River and about 3 miles (5 km) south of the town. It was 1,500 vines on rootstocks brought from New Mexico. Today the house works about 37 acres (15 hectares) spread over four vineyards, Hacienda San Agustín, Santa Sabina, El Molino, and La Ruela, between about 4,900 and 5,600 ft (1,500 to 1,700 m) in elevation, with eleven varieties.

The first harvest was in 2014 and, according to its website, that same year it won two golds at the Ensenada Tierra de Vinos competition. The reds kept going to competitions. The 2020 Malbec won Grand Gold at México Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2021, and the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon won silver in the 2022 edition. Aging is long, twelve to fourteen months in French or American oak.

To see it, book the Ruta Tres Ríos, with a tour of the hacienda and the vineyards, a tasting with Chihuahua cooking and, if you like, the make-your-own-wine workshop, where each guest builds a blend. Tours are concentrated from spring to fall.

The wines
