The house
Praon is a village in Asturias, and the family that planted this vineyard on the edge of Aguascalientes came from there. Before that it toured wine regions of South America, Europe, the Middle East, and South Africa, and in 2015 it set out to make wine on virgin land, without fertilizers or pesticides. It wanted it small, about 7 acres (3 hectares), with short runs and grapes that ripen on the Aguascalientes high plateau.
Merlot, Malbec, and Syrah grow at a little over 5,900 ft (1,800 m), farmed organically. Viticulturist Trinidad Jiménez tends the rows and Lluís Raventós signs the winemaking, and according to the house the work of the two has consisted of adapting the vines to the climate of the Aguascalientes highlands.
The estate is at km 1.7 of the old road to Calvillo, in El Cariñán, near the capital. It has cabins and glamping with views of the rows, picnics in the vineyard and a fire pit at night, and at harvest it opens to the grape picking as part of the state's wine route.
Everything comes from its own vineyard. Petricor is a Merlot, Ascuas a Malbec, and Serendipia a hand-harvested Syrah rosé, which is also made as a sparkling wine. The house calls its refuge among the rows Casa Praön, where guests can stay the night, a few miles from the city.
