The house
The Alonso family's wine came after the cheese. The grandfather, Vidal Alonso Lavín, left Santander, passed through New York and Veracruz, opened a grocery in Mexico City, and ended up in the cattle business. Once in Querétaro, the family founded Quesos VAI and on that base planted about 7 acres (3 hectares) of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Grenache, and Verdejo, in the municipality of Colón.
The winery deliberately makes short runs of whites, reds, and a sparkling wine. The tour passes through the winery and the barrel and bottle cellars and ends with a tasting. On the same estate you can see how the cheese is made, and there is a restaurant, a hotel among the vines, and a calendar of dinners and parties during the year.
