The house

Two high-elevation Zacatecas vineyards supply Raíz de Plata, which makes its wine in Los Haro, a community in the municipality of Jerez, in Zacatecas. The Viñedo Martínez, in Fresnillo, is at about 7,050 ft (2,150 m) on calcareous soils with a cool microclimate, and from there come the Semillón and part of the rosé. The Valle de Barranquillas, in Luis Moya, sits at about 6,600 ft (2,020 m), and the house credits it with a wide swing in temperature between day and night, which concentrates the tannins of its reds of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo, and Nebbiolo.

Almost everything is bottled by variety, with two blends and a late harvest completing six labels. The winery and its cellar can be toured Thursday through Sunday, with the winemaking explained and a tasting of the full selection, and in downtown Jerez the house also has a boutique with tastings. Private events are scheduled any day, by reservation.
