The house
In 2025 the Asociación de Sommeliers Mexicanos (the Mexican Sommeliers Association) named Puerta del Lobo Winery of the Year, and that same year its 2020 red E60 won the Grand Gold Medal at México Selection by CMB. The estate is in El Marqués, Querétaro, on the road from La Griega to El Lobo, and covers more than 445 acres (180 hectares) with a vineyard, the winery, restaurants, lodging, and a residential development.
The vineyard covers a little over 62 acres (25 hectares) divided into six plots, on soils dominated by clay with silt, limestone, and gravel. Nine varieties grow side by side. Among the reds are Merlot, Malbec, Tempranillo, and Syrah, and among the whites Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo, along with Parellada, Xarello, and Macabeo, the three classic grapes of Catalan cava. The winemaking is in the hands of Cayo Armas Lima, whom the winery credits when it announces its awards.
Production runs around 50,000 bottles a year, in 14 labels of young wine, crianza, and reserva, among whites, rosés, reds, and sparkling wines, according to the winery. A private vineyards program lets you have your own rows and a wine with the owner's name.
The tour of the vineyard, the tank room, and the barrel room, with the option to cork and label a bottle of your own, is followed by a tasting with a sommelier and lunch at Ruinas, one of the estate's two restaurants. For a night on the estate there is Casa Blend, a villa with a pool among the vines.
The wines
Three lines, young, crianza, and reserva, in white, rosé, red, and sparkling. To the reds of Merlot, Malbec, Tempranillo, and Syrah it adds whites of Spanish tradition such as Verdejo, Xarello, Parellada, and Macabeo. In the more ambitious reds, like the E60, part of the wine goes through oak.
