The place
Rancho La Puerta is a wellness resort on the outskirts of Tecate, at the foot of Mount Kuchumaa, run by the same family since 1940. It covers about 4,000 acres, with some 40 miles of hiking trails, about 32 acres of gardens, the Tres Estrellas organic farm, and a cooking school called La Cocina Que Canta. From the Tecate border crossing, the entrance is about three miles west along Avenida Juárez. For wine travelers, the ranch calendar includes a day trip to the Guadalupe Valley, with a visit and tasting at two wineries and a three-course lunch paired with wine at Adobe Guadalupe. It leaves in the morning, returns in the afternoon, and runs for groups of 7 to 15 guests, with wineries that change by season. The Bazar del Sol shop carries a selection of Guadalupe Valley wines, and the kitchen draws on the farm, which also makes its own goat cheese. All 86 casitas have a patio, and they range from studios for one guest to two-bedroom suites for four. From the Hacienda category up they have a fireplace, and the Villas Cielo add a small private plunge pool. Scheduled transportation runs from San Diego International Airport on Saturdays and Wednesdays, about an hour and a half away. It suits travelers who want a few days of exercise, spa time, and garden-to-table cooking, with a day of wine in the valley arranged by the ranch itself.
