The house
The name Tierra Adentro comes from a road. The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the silver route between Mexico City and Santa Fe that UNESCO named a World Heritage site in 2010, ran through this land, and the house put it on the label of its wine.
The story of Campo Real begins in 1974, when Isauro López López and Ascensión de Lira began winemaking activity. The first bottle came out in 1980, under the name Reserva del Patrón. The first harvest of its own grapes arrived in 2002, Tierra Adentro has been sold since 2010, and in 2014 a 2011 vintage earned its first international medal, a silver at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. In 2016, after a renovation, the winery opened to the public.
Winemaking is led by Dr. Joaquín Madero Tamargo, with Hugo D'Acosta López as consultant. The 148 acres (60 hectares) of vineyard extend to about 7,550 ft (2,300 m) in elevation, on the Trancoso plateau, Zacatecas, and in 2023 the Merlot 2019 won gold at the China Wine & Spirits Awards Best Value, in Hong Kong.
The estate is toured aboard the Expreso Tierra Adentro, a train that crosses vineyards, gardens, the cellar, and the tasting room, or by horse-drawn carriage (a calandria). There is a Barrel Museum, with retired barrels that Zacatecas artists have transformed, and to stretch the afternoon there are the restaurant Albuquerque and the Terraza Santa Fe, semi-covered and overlooking the vineyard.
