The house
Jamädi means to give thanks in Otomi, and it is the name under which El Refugio signs its wines, with a coyote as its emblem. The vineyard is in Nopala de Villagrán, in the Valle del Mezquital, at about 7,350 ft (2,240 m), and the press has called it the first vineyard in Hidalgo. Its arrival made Hidalgo the fifteenth state with commercial wine.
It started in 2018 with five partners. Two are Argentine winemakers, Agostina Astegiano and Fabricio Hernández, and three are Mexican, Diego Ballester, Felipe Magaña, and Rafael Garza. Astegiano has her own winery in Mendoza and has spent years in Mexico advising growers in the Bajío and the Mezquital. She and Hernández sign the house wines.
Red grapes rule in the vineyard, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Tempranillo, Merlot, Grenache, and Petit Verdot. The Jamädi line includes blends of Syrah with Cabernet Sauvignon and of Tempranillo with Merlot, and a rosé that won silver at México Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles in 2021 and again in 2023. The house also bottles a label called Irracional.
You visit with a tour of the plantings and the winery and tastings of one to five wines, some with pairings, and there is a shop. It is at km 66 of the Pachuca to Querétaro highway, near the Querétaro border.
