The house
The Badáns, a family of Swiss and French descent, built this ranch from scratch in the 1950s, long before Guadalupe Valley (Valle de Guadalupe) filled up with tasting rooms. Today it combines a vineyard, an underground cellar, an organic farm, and a producers' market.
The dream began with Henri Badan, who saw a future in the valley. His son Antonio, an oceanographer, made the wine for years in a cellar short on technology and long on patience, until he died in 2008. Since then his sister Natalia Badán, who grew up on this land, has run the house with help from her children.
The vineyard yields Bordeaux grapes and also Chasselas, the Swiss white that became the house signature. Production is small, and much of it sells in the region. The organic farm around the vines supplies Deckman's en el Mogor, chef Drew Deckman's restaurant on the property, and other cooks in the area.
The ranch sits at the km 85.5 marker of Federal Highway 3, between Tecate and Ensenada. A visit includes a tasting in the cellar and, on market day, vegetables from the farm. The winery has no confirmed website, so the practical way to reach it is a message on Facebook. Natalia Badán suggested drinking the 2020 vintage of the red from 2025 on, which means that bottle is now inside the window she proposed.
