The house
Las Nubes named its blends after the sky: Cumulus, Nimbus. Víctor Segura bought about 49 acres (20 hectares) in Ejido El Porvenir in 2008, planted the first 30 acres (12 hectares) in 2009, and today the estate totals about 74 acres (30 hectares) with ten varieties, from Nebbiolo and Grenache to Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
The house works mostly with blends. Cumulus, its reserve line, is 40% Grenache, 30% Carignan, and 30% Tempranillo, Mediterranean in style, and Nimbus mixes Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tempranillo with fruit from Guadalupe Valley (Valle de Guadalupe) and the Valle de San Vicente. There are also varietals of Nebbiolo, Syrah, and Petite Sirah, and the white Kuiiy, Sauvignon Blanc with Chardonnay.
The grapes are hand-selected at harvest, and the property collects rainwater, which in the valley falls almost only in winter. From the terrace, set on the hillside, the eye drops over the rows and opens toward the valley.
Tastings happen up there, on the terrace, with regional cheeses and cured meats, or you can take the guided tour of the vineyard, the winery, and the cellar. It opens every day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with reservations through the house's website, and the shop sells the full range, from the white Kuiiy to the Cumulus reserve. The entrance is on Callejón Emiliano Zapata, in El Porvenir.
